Hands-on science exhibits, planetarium shows, and lightning demos — we break down what’s great and what to skip.
Short answer: yes, absolutely worth it. Scienceworks is one of Melbourne’s most underrated family destinations — many city families overlook it because of the Spotswood location, but it’s 15 minutes from the CBD and the exhibits are extraordinary.
Best exhibits for different ages
- Under 5: Nitty Gritty Super City — role-play city with toddler-scale buildings
- 5–8: Sportsworks — interactive sports science, hugely popular
- 8+: Lightning Room show and Planetarium
Practical tips
Book the Lightning Room and Planetarium in advance — they sell out on school holidays. The on-site cafe is reasonable but BYO lunch is easy as there’s a great outdoor picnic area.
