The brand-new platypus exhibit at Melbourne Zoo is now open, with underwater viewing tunnels and interactive touch pools that kids absolutely love.
We visited on opening weekend with two kids (ages 4 and 7) and spent well over an hour in the new exhibit alone. The underwater viewing tunnel puts you at eye level with the platypus as they swim, and it’s genuinely spectacular. The touch pools have supervised interaction with freshwater invertebrates — our kids were obsessed.
What to know before you go
- The exhibit is included in general zoo admission
- Busiest between 11am–1pm — arrive early for quieter viewing
- Platypus are most active in morning and late afternoon
- The interactive dig station is great for kids 5+
Our verdict
Melbourne Zoo has always been worth the trip, but the Platypus House is a genuine new reason to go — even if you’ve been many times before. A must-visit.
